Upcoming public performances for Preston and Northern

We have a busy month ahead for both bands, with two opportunities to see players from Preston and Northern performing at upcoming public events.

This Friday, the 28th of September, a combined band featuring both Preston and Northern players will march through the city at the AFL Grand Final Parade. The band will be leading the West Coast Eagles from the corner of Collins Street and Spring Street, down Wellington Parade to the MCG. For further event details, see the AFL website.

Both bands will also feature in the Victorian Bands League’s Bandstand Sunday concert. This annual event aims to promote banding to the general public through a free concert at Federation Square. Preston and Northern will join bands from across the state in what promises to be a fun day for all involved. Preston will be onstage from 12:35-1:05 and Northern will play from 2:15-2:45.

Northern defend title at Latrobe Valley Eisteddfod

or the second year in a row, Northern Brass has returned victorious from the Latrobe Valley Eisteddfod. The annual competition was held in Traralgon on the 16th of September.

Northern’s attendance this year marked the first performance with new musical director, Marc Nethercot. The band presented a rather traditional program, featuring old favourites “A Moorside Suite” and “Florentine March” alongside a much newer arrangement of Nicaea by the band’s own Jared McCunnie.

The band produced an enjoyable program to secure victory in the B Grade competition. The band is hoping to continue building upon their strong performances ahead of next year’s national championships.

Preston win at the VBL State Band Championships

Preston has regained the Victorian State Championship trophy after their win in the A Grade competition.

The state championships were held at Founders Hall in Ballarat on the 18th of August. Fresh off their trip to New Zealand, Preston put in a solid performance of all pieces to claim the win over Kew Band Melbourne. The contest was very tight, with the adjudicator expressing that both bands had produced performances deserving of the win. Preston were able to edge out a one point victory in all categories, leading to a 4-point win overall.

In claiming the trophy, Preston MD Andrew Snell praised the efforts of all players involved; highlighting the hard work that went into bringing the program together in a short period of time.

Full results of the event are available at the Victorian Bands’ League website.
